Unto God what is God’s

First of all, I want to apologize for going so long without a new devotional.  Our phone line was cut accidentally by road workers and it took a few days to get it repaired.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking at the Alabama Legislative Prayer Breakfast in Montgomery .  It was a first for me…sharing with a group of politicians who make decisions that affect the lives of every person in our state.  I think they were relieved when I announced I had no hidden agenda…that I did not come to discuss social issues…that there was no call to take up a cause.  I simply told them I came to say, “God loves you!” and that while Jesus is probably not too concerned with social issues of the day, He is vitally concerned with our personal lives.

So that’s what we talked about…our personal relationship with Christ, and how we can give our whole selves to Him.  We talked about making a difference in our families and friendships for Him.  We talked about sharing Him with others through our actions.

Someone once showed Jesus a coin and asked if one should pay taxes.  We remember what Jesus said, “Give Caesar what is Caesar’s and give God what is God’s.”  Too often we have focused on the first part of sentence while the truth may reside in the last half.  I’m not sure Jesus really cares what we give to Caesar, but He is vitally concerned with what we give to God.  Simply, what belongs to God is us and that is what He expects us to give.  If we will just give God ourselves, then families, churches and governments will make the right decisions and everything will fall into place.  What we do is based on who we are, and if we are Christ’s then we will bear His fruit.

What I found in Montgomery were a group of men who earnestly seek to do the will of God.  Fathers and husbands and friends who ask for our prayers to give them the discernment to make the right decisions…men who recognize the supremacy of God and feel His love through the cross of Jesus Christ.  I believe they will lead this state in the right direction…more importantly; I believe they seek to give to God that which is God’s.  It is my prayer that all of us give ourselves to Him so He can use us to change the world.  Thanks be to God.

Love in Christ,
Billy
