The Road Less Traveled

For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.  Matthew7:13-14

I was thinking the other day about that famous quote, “I have taken the road less traveled, and it has made all the difference.”  Certainly that can apply in many ways to our walk with Christ.  Jesus tells us in Matthew that the road we travel with Him is a narrow one, and only a few find it.

It is not a road of this world.  We also know about those roads—roads where the rules and regulations of the world apply—roads we might assume take us to places of joy and happiness, only to find that they lead instead to nowhere and at the end of those roads there is loneliness and emptiness.  We’ve all been down those roads.  They are crowded with others and beckon to our wants and desires.  They are tempting and flattering and easily traveled.

Then along comes Jesus.  He sets our sights higher and replaces our self-centered road map with a spiritual one—full of love for God and for our fellow man.  He gives us a different set of rules, where anything is possible and the truth is our only guide.  The way seems to be more difficult, with higher hills to climb and dangerous curves.  But we are not in control.  Christ is the pilot—He is the guide.  We are only along for the ride because we have chosen Him, His way.

The world scoffs at the road Christ points to.  It doesn’t understand it.  No one can understand it until they have chosen Him.  The truth is not revealed until we go to the cross and respond to God’s act of love by following His Son.  So the world continues on “the road that leads to nowhere.”

But for those who follow Him—consider the possibilities!  Consider the excitement and the joy!  Consider the hope for tomorrow—the hope for all eternity!  Consider the love that surpasses anything the world can offer!  For nothing can separate from the love of Christ!  And through Him, all things are possible!  ALL THINGS!

Truly, following Jesus takes us down a different road.  It is a road less traveled, and it has made all the difference in our lives.  Thanks be to God.

Love In Christ,
Billy
