Miracle of Birth – In August

Abraham fell flat on his face. And then he laughed, thinking, "Can a hundred-year-old man father a son? And can Sarah, at ninety years, have a baby?"  Genesis 17-17

First let me say up front, this is not Billy and I hope he does not mind me using his web site to share God’s miracle and confirm the existence of prophets even today.  I feel this is a story that needs to be told.

Just a few days ago our family celebrated the 12th birthday for our son, Will.  This is a day we had been told would not be.  Terri and I had been married almost 12 years and had been to several different doctors in Alabama and Tennessee in hopes of having children.

Her doctors in Decatur performed laparoscopic surgeries in search of potential problems.  After working with Terri’s regular doctors, we went to Vanderbilt to see a fertility specialist.   There were more tests, more prescriptions and another laparoscopic surgery to examine some colored fluid as it attempted to make its way through her uterus and tubes.   A slight problem was found with one of her tubes.

A few more years passed of trying different infertility drugs, and continuing to seek a solution for a problem we had no control over.   We finally made a trip to see yet another specialist at UAB.  He basically told us that time was running out, that the biological clock was ticking.  We were told that our only chance of having children was to consider in vitro fertilization.  I’ll never forget that trip home, as we both cried almost the entire trip.

We talked about the procedure and the small percentage that it would even work in our case.  After much prayer and consideration, we decided not to try in vitro.   We decided to just leave it all in God’s hands.

We continued praying. Our church family prayed for us continuously.  Even as we prayed, we were adjusting ourselves to the fact we would be childless.  There had been so many ups and downs and everything always seemed to turn into just another dead-end.

One night we were home watching TV when there was a knock at the door.  It was our neighbor and friend Billy Coleman.  Billy was returning home from an Emmaus team meeting in Hamilton and wanted to know if he could come in and talk with us a few minutes.   He told us that God had spoken to him and that he didn’t know when or how, but that we were going to be parents.  He said he didn’t know if it would be our flesh and blood or possibly an adoption but it was going to happen.

After Billy left we just looked at each other with looks of maybe a little hope. We had been there so many times.  I remember praying to God, that He was in control and that if it was meant for us to have children I knew He would grant our wish (but please hurry).

A few months passed. Then one night while I was in the den watching a ball game, Terri came in and wanted me to come look at something.  She took me to see an early pregnancy test – it showed positive.   We were both very excited but still cautious.  Terri had been told that if she ever got pregnant there was a chance it would be a tubular pregnancy and to get in for a sonogram as soon as possible.   After a sonogram a few days later confirmed the pregnancy and that the Little One was where it needed to be, we could finally start spreading the news.

On August 6, 1997 our miracle child was born.

We can never thank everyone enough for all your prayers, support and encouragement throughout the years.  We continue to thank God for answered prayers.

Love IN Christ,
Greg
