Don't Forget The Cross

This Sunday we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Our churches will be filled to capacity.  Sermons will be preached on the empty tomb.  Anthems will be sung about Mary’s famous quote, “I have seen the Lord!”  We will sing “He Lives” and “Up from the Grave He Arose.”  There will be a victorious feeling in the air.  He has risen!  He has risen indeed!  But…

Don’t forget the cross.

We will all ask the question on April 27th, “Where did everyone go?” or “Why didn’t everyone come back?”  Why does that always happen…every year?

Don’t forget the cross.

We need to remember that before He rose again, Jesus died on the cross…a terrible death…a lonely death… for me … for you.  He died for us because sin separated us from God.  We needed the forgiveness only Christ could give to free us from our slavery.  We needed the grace only God could give through His Son…to fill our lives with His spirit.   We needed to know how much God cares for us…that He would send His Son to die for us.  It happened on the cross.

Don’t forget the cross.

The resurrection is the celebration…the joy of victory…our victory through Christ.  But without the crucifixion, there is no resurrection.  What changed our life was the cross…what gives us hope is the cross…what grants us peace is the cross…what keeps us going when we’re about to fall is the cross.

Don’t forget the cross.

There are certainly a lot of reasons to accept Christ and none of them are bad.  Whatever it takes to accept Him into our lives, then praise God for that.  But when I think about what He did for me on the cross… for me, well, all the other reasons fall to the back on the line.  I serve Christ because He died so I could live.  He paid a price I should have had to pay.  As the song says, “I’m forgiven because He was forsaken.  I’m accepted, He was condemned…amazing love!”  If we go to cross, if we experience His sacrifice for us…then we’ll be back…we’ll serve Him forever…our lives will never be the same.”

Don’t forget the cross.

Let’s pray for this Sunday when our churches will be filled.  Let’s celebrate the resurrection of our Lord…His presence in our lives…the joy of our victory through Christ.  Let’s pray that we will never be the same again!  May our churches explode with the power of His resurrection.  But Monday is coming, and then Tuesday, and then the rest of our lives.  Tough times will come again, it will be hard to feel victorious.  Circumstances will be difficult.  The hills will get steeper.  What will sustain us?  What will keeps us in His direction?   Where will we turn?

Don’t forget the cross.

Love in Christ,
Billy
